Over the last few years I've been working on several songs that I could perform without assembling an ensemble. I wanted to work on music that my friends and family could connect with. In this process I found that my greatest inspirations are the meaningful relationships in my life. I see all of these relationships as very dear to me because of a perspective provided by my world-view. Through this specific world-view I have found why I do music. I try to express these stories and the uniquness of people through my compositions.
My first ever composition is titled Hope. I began composition in a very dark time in my life and this piece was a way for me to express myself in a way that was unavailable to me with the current double bass repertoire. This piece changed through out the years with my technical growth and perspective. Toward the end of the piece you will notice that there is an opening of optimism. The first run of this piece was titled Struggle for Hope and then was eventually titled Hope as I gained perspective.
Other pieces such as Lily, and Bone of My Bone were written for friends. Lily was written for my friend's daughter to celebrate her first birthday. Bone of my Bone was written for my friend's wedding anniversary. In these these pieces I try to convey stories and the personalities of the individuals involved. During the last few years I have realized - from friend to friend - there are alot of styles of music that I needed to learn in order to write a piece that they would enjoy. So as I was connecting with different people I was also connectiong with different styles of music. As a result, my music has developed into a "hybridized" style.
I was fortunate to be able to record this album through the Enigmatic Music label. The idea of recording it live was the producer's (Alvin Zamudio) idea. The live recording help to give life to the recording process. I feel as if there is a certain flow in live performances that can't always be captured in the studio.
I am really thankful for all the great people in my life that have been the inspiration to my music; especially my wife. She has supported and encouraged me through this entire process. Thank-you
